Frank Gavencky (1888-1966) was born in Chicago and studied art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art. Although he started his successful art career in Chicago, he eventually moved to Los Angeles, California and remained there for the rest of his life. The painting below is one of his favorite subjects showing a snowy Midwestern scene, probably Chicago, emphasizing vibrant colors so as to give life to the stark contrasting white of the cold and snowy winter. His paintings have becoming increasingly popular since his death in 1966 with one oil painting of a similar but less vibrant winter scene, selling at auction for over $15,000.
