One of the more frequent questions we receive from our Chico massage clients concerns the difference between a deep tissue massage and our classic Swedish massage.  The difference is primarily associated with the techniques used by the massage therapists during the massage.  With a Swedish Massage, the therapist uses longer flowing strokes that relax the superficial layers of muscle tissue.  Make no mistake, however that our massage therapist provide a very firm Swedish massage and often clients find a firm Swedish at our Chico massage office is better than a deep tissue massage at other Chico massage businesses and day spas.

However, with a deep tissue massage, your massage therapist first warms up the body, usually with Swedish techniques, then begins applying slower and much firmer pressure, often using forearms and elbows to reach the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Because it is necessary to warm up the body prior to applying deep tissue massage techniques (otherwise injury could result), it is essentially impossible to do a full body deep tissue massage in an hour. Consequently, a one hour deep tissue massage at Genesis Massage involves the application of deep tissue techniques to two or three problem areas that the client feels need extra deep work, not the entire body. A full body deep tissue massage, requires an hour and a half. Some Chico massage businesses attempt to provide one hour deep tissue massages by using deep tissue but applying it in more of a Swedish fashion. This can cause injuries. All of our deep tissue massages are done by deep tissue certified massage therapists who have received special training in the application of deep tissue massage techniques. This is not the case at all Chico massage businesses, so you should always inquire about your massage therapist qualifications. Incorrect application of deep tissue massage techniques can cause significant injuries.
